Opponauts, if you remember, I am the "yup, still having bad back problems" guy from way back in early 2014. I made many discoveries regarding my ability to play Gran Turismo while on Oxycontin and Valium, but not before spending plenty of time looking at the ceiling and not lifting anything heavier than a fingernail clipper.
SO, the latest from my doctor is that the injections and physical therapy we have tried so far aren't going to fix this thing, and it's time to break out the knives and other tools. (literally screwdrivers and allen wrenches)
Um, yeah.
We're looking at anterior lumbosacral fixation surgery this summer, which, according to google image search, will be much more pleasant for me while anaesthetized. Has anyone here been through such a thing, or known anyone who has? I'm concerned about things like being able to give my kids piggyback rides and do karting/autocross stuff after the year or so of recovery.

Oh boy. I dunno what kind of degeneration you've got, so anything I might say wouldn't be correct. One fused/reinforced vertebral link, though? I have a friend that got 5 fused together because of disc degeneration. Made a flat spot in his spine, lost some bend over flexibility, but otherwise was fine. So not much flexibility loss, and I assume (if the doctors have it right) that the foundational reason for the initial degeneration won't simply transfer to another area. That reason they may not know, because it's soft tissue and habit related, and that needs something other than drugs and knives to deal with. (You can't cut/drug a habit.)

I think I could do that myself. "Kids, get the mirror, and my Leatherman!" I've had sciatica on and off for 23 years (since I was 20). It sucks, but surgery terrifies me. I used to have a chiropractor who I loved but I moved away and haven't found a good one yet. Just please get a second, third, fourth and fifth opinion. Good luck.

I agree I have 3 bad discs in the lumbar area and I refuse to have any back surgery. Please get as many different opinions before you let them perform surgery on your back. I have a few friends who are worse now than before they had any surgery.

Hum. What is the cause of the problem? Is it a discal hernia?

Yea i've done something like that. What is the cause? If i rad those images right are they just fusing the last vertebra to your tailbone? If they offer you a video to watch PASS!!!!!

just so you don;t freak out over all this, life goes on. I still mountain bike alot and even did a superman dive over the handle bars without injuring my back. I'm pretty sure I had a concussion and the bike came flying down the hill and landing on tip of me slicing my knee open. My back does get sore at times and my left foot doesn't sweat any more. I also have a rod which looks slightly more intense than what your looking at.

I've had chronic problems with it for almost 10 years. It's always been treatable with chiropractic alone until now. My L5 vertebra has spondylolysis, so instead of forming a complete ring it's split into two pieces and flexes too much, which has aggravated and degenerated the disc below. The disc is bulging and impinging on the nerves giving pain and weakness to my legs.

There is a minimally invasive technology that exist that may be worth trying before going to the extreme as described in your post. Do some research on the cool-rf biacuplasty procedure (also known as Transdiscal). This procedure kills the nerves thus cutting the pain signal sent to the brain. Mention this to your doctor. Also look-up the Cleveland Clinic Pain Management Dept.
